Happy Violence and Seattle Love With Dada Life, Part I (Exclusive Interview)

[divider]A Primer on Pillow Fights and Energy[/divider]

Dada Life have become synonymous with pillow fights now that it has been a feature of so many Compound events and earned them a Guinness World Record for World’s Largest Pillow Fight. We were happy that we ended up getting to talk to Stefan after the show, as it meant he didn’t need to be coy at all about the Seattle Compound, unlike in the teasers we got before the show. He got to give us the low-down on just where the joyous, fluffy Happy Violence idea came from. It turns out it was the brainchild of a brainstorming meeting with their management. The boys like to see just how far they can push the limits of their insurance and this was one of those pushed limits that left them pleasantly surprised. The pillow fight was one of those ideas that was initially a no, until they realized it was so crazy it just might work.

The rest, as they say, is history and as a result some of us are still finding pillow fluff in our kandi. What’s the best part of the Dada pillow fights? Since there are no rules but the Rules of Dada, traditional social graces fly out the window.

“We have a residency in Hakassan in las Vegas, and there can sometimes be some uptight tables, maybe some high rollers spending so much money. The pillow fight is amazing to put in front of them because they participate, and them coming from this “cool guy” thinking they’re so cool with their table and being a high roller or whatever. Then they start doing a pillow fight. They try so hard to be super cool and then you just hand them a pillow and they just melt. And that is the whole thing for us, just to prove that you can have fun and you don’t have to think so much.”

Who knew that something as silly sounding as a pillow fight could be such a vehicle for social change? We were itching to hear what else was coming down the Dada Land pipeline, but alas, now that Stefan is learning that even their more crazy ideas are possible, he was pretty tight-lipped about what we can expect. We have no doubts that it will be something amazing, as the imaginations of Dada seem to be limitless.

“The thing is, I am not going to tell you because they MIGHT happen. Insurance companies will maybe change their minds or something might happen. So we want to keep all those ideas. Then one day when you come to a compound it’s like “what the fuck is this!?” and that is the whole idea. You never know what you get.”

Dada’s energy feeds off of antics such as this, as they love watching the smiles on the faces of their fans when something unexpected comes up. They always keep their promise of giving us all night if we give them One Smile and we love seeing the results. Stefan and Olle have an energy that is rare to find in a world of DJ’s who are becoming more and more formulaic.
